A Field Guide to Slopwith a note on the genus Slopcore

Slop is the name that stuck for the low-grade, mass-produced content generative AI pours into feeds. Merriam-Webster made “slop” its 2025 Word of the Year, defining it as “digital content of low quality that is produced usually in quantity by means of artificial intelligence” [1]. Slopcore adds the internet's favourite suffix, “-core”, which turns anything into an aesthetic. The word has no settled definition yet; one documented use is the title of a Danish electronic album, which a reviewer read as a nod, perhaps ironic, to the AI-slop critique [2].

So the short answer: slopcore is the look of AI slop treated as a style, either a label for slop's recognisable vibe or a knowing, deliberate embrace of it. The plates below describe the species; the key at the end helps you place a specimen; the last section explains what the suffix does.

A Key to Specimens

A dichotomous key, the kind botanists use: answer one question at a time about the thing in front of you, and it narrows to a name.

On the Suffix “-core”

“-core” began in music genre names (hardcore, metalcore) and became a general-purpose aesthetic-maker after normcore, a word popularised in 2013–14, showed it could name a whole way of dressing. Since then it attaches to almost anything with a recognisable look and mood:

normcoredeliberately plain, unremarkable clotheshalf a joke about trend-chasing

Reading one: descriptive

Slopcore names a recognisable visual and sonic register: the golden-hour gloss, the smoothed faces, the dream lettering, the frictionless playlist filler. Calling something “very slopcore” is a critic's shorthand, like calling a film “very Netflix”.

Reading two: adoptive

Slopcore is slop made on purpose and with a wink: artists using the tells as material, the way vaporwave took mall muzak and corporate stock imagery and made them strange. Here the insult becomes a badge, which is how internet culture tends to absorb its own put-downs.

Neither reading is official. The word is young and its use in criticism is thin; treat this page as a field guide to the territory the word points at, not a dictionary entry. Note too that “slop” is already stretching beyond AI, applied loosely to architecture and fashion [3].
